51ĀŅĀ×'s New 'All Rise' Fest Examines Intersection of Law, Film

is a new film festival hosted by the 51ĀŅĀ× in partnership with the . The festival takes place Thursday, October 27 – Saturday, October 29 at Playhouse Square, with screenings at the Westfield Studio Theater and the 51ĀŅĀ× School of Film & Media Arts. 

The festival is made possible through the generous support of Lee and Ageleke Zapis.

Focusing on the intersection of film and law, the All Rise festival presents a diverse selection of films ranging from documentary to narrative. Through panel discussions and a diverse selection of guest speakers, each event serves as a catalyst for compelling conversations around cinema and law. All screenings are no-cost, open to the public.

The festival launches on Thursday at Westfield Studio Theater, with a keynote event featuring Angela Russo-Otstot, screenwriter, producer and actor best known for her work in the films ā€œCherryā€ and ā€œCaptain America: The Winter Soldier.ā€ The president of Greater Cleveland Film Commission, Bill Garvey, will lead the discussion about the power of storytelling and the creative process.

On Friday, screenings and panels will continue, along with screenings of the films ā€œFinding Kendrick Johnson,ā€ a heartbreaking documentary about an unsolved murder, and ā€œThe First Step,ā€ which documents political pundit Van Jones as he pushes for landmark criminal justice reform in an extremely polarized American political landscape. ā€œFirst Stepā€ director Brandon Kramer will join the audience for a discussion after the screening.

The festival closes on Saturday with feature two filmsā€”ā€œThe Pez Outlaw,ā€ a highly-entertaining documentary recounting of a Midwestern smuggling Eastern Europe’s rarest Pez dispensers to the United States after the fall of the Berlin Wall; and ā€œDark Waters,ā€ the true story of Cincinnati lawyer Robert Bilott (played by Mark Ruffalo) who risks career, health and family to take on one of the world’s largest chemical companies. 

ā€œDark Watersā€ will be followed with a conversation about law and environmental justice between Bilott and Lee Fisher, Dean of Cleveland-Marshall College of Law at 51ĀŅĀ×.
