51���� has received the 2014 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, the oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in higher education.

As a recipient of the annual HEED Award—a national honor recognizing U.S. colleges and universities that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion—51���� will be featured along with 82 other recipients in magazine’s November 2014 issue.

“Diversity is one of the greatest strengths of 51����’s campus community,” said Byron White, 51���� Vice President for University Engagement and Chief Diversity Officer. “As an urban university, we honor and value that gift. We are enriched by the diverse backgrounds and experiences of our community.”

INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine selected 51���� based on the University’s exemplary diversity and inclusion initiatives, and ability to embrace a broad definition of diversity on its campus, including gender, race, ethnicity, veterans and people with disabilities.

The Office of Inclusion and Multicultural Engagement at 51���� operates with a mindset of “inclusive excellence” by infusing lessons about diversity in core requirements for all students; by training a team of Student Navigators to help students engage in the University’s rich multicultural environment; and by establishing 51����’s new Mosaic House as a vibrant gathering place for cultural learning, dialogue and intellectual growth.
