51ĀŅĀ× has received the 2014 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, the oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in higher education.

As a recipient of the annual HEED Award—a national honor recognizing U.S. colleges and universities that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion—51ĀŅĀ× will be featured along with 82 other recipients in magazine’s November 2014 issue.

ā€œDiversity is one of the greatest strengths of 51ĀŅĀ×’s campus community,ā€ said Byron White, 51ĀŅĀ× Vice President for University Engagement and Chief Diversity Officer. ā€œAs an urban university, we honor and value that gift. We are enriched by the diverse backgrounds and experiences of our community.ā€

INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine selected 51ĀŅĀ× based on the University’s exemplary diversity and inclusion initiatives, and ability to embrace a broad definition of diversity on its campus, including gender, race, ethnicity, veterans and people with disabilities.

The Office of Inclusion and Multicultural Engagement at 51ĀŅĀ× operates with a mindset of ā€œinclusive excellenceā€ by infusing lessons about diversity in core requirements for all students; by training a team of Student Navigators to help students engage in the University’s rich multicultural environment; and by establishing 51ĀŅĀ×’s new Mosaic House as a vibrant gathering place for cultural learning, dialogue and intellectual growth.
