Lecture features Dr. Kimberly P. Johnson

51����’s Black Studies Program is celebrating Women’s History Month with “Womanist Preaching: Speaking Truth to Power,” a lecture by Tennessee State University’s Dr. Kimberly P. Johnson, on March 21, 2019.

The lecture, which is part of the Ralph Pruitt Lecture, Arts and Media Series, will discuss Dr. Johnson’s book, The Womanist Preacher: Proclaiming Womanist Rhetoric from the Pulpit, published in 2017. Her work dissects the rhetoric within womanist preaching, categorizes sermons under the four tenets of womanist preaching and creates models that reflect the sermons of radical subjectivity, traditional communalism, redemptive self-loveand critical engagement.

Dr. Johnson will be available for a book signing in the Howard A. Mims Office of African American Support Services in Berkman Hall, room 137 from 5:30 to 6 p.m. Free and open to the public, the lecture begins at 6 p.m. in Berkman Hall, room 136. The event will then reconvene for a reception in the Howard A. Mims Office of African American Support Services at 7:15 p.m. 

Dr. Johnson is an associate professor of communications and women’s studies at Tennessee State University, where she currently serves as the assessment coordinator for the department. She teaches the senior project capstone, communication research methods, honors public speaking, fundamentals of communication, public speaking, persuasion and African-American rhetoric to undergraduate students. Dr. Johnson earned a Bachelor of Science in speech at Northwestern University, a master of divinity at McCormick Theological Seminary and a doctor of philosophy in communication and a graduate certificate in women’s and gender studies at the University of Memphis.
