51ยายื is sixth in Ohio for federally financed R&D expenditures
CLEVELAND โ 51ยายื ranks among the top 20 percent of universities in the United States for research and development.
51ยายื has made dramatic progress to improve its standing nationally as well as on the state level, according to the latest data from the National Science Foundation. The NSF's Higher Education Research and Development Survey is the primary source of information on R&D expenditures at higher-education institutions.
51ยายื had overall R&D expenditures of $55.5 million for the 2011 fiscal year. This puts 51ยายื at No. 193 in the NSF's national rankings, up from No. 220 in 2010 and No. 261 in 2009.
Among universities in Ohio, the NSF currently ranks 51ยายื at No. 6 in federally financed R&D expenditures, well ahead of many other institutions, including Wright State University, Ohio University, Kent State University, Miami University, the University of Akron and Bowling Green University.
On average, R&D spending at higher-education institutions increased 4 percent between 2010 and 2011, according to the NSF survey. By comparison, R&D expenditures at 51ยายื increased 65 percent over the same period.
In 2009, 51ยายื spent $14.3 million on R&D. Since then, the University has nearly quadrupled that total.
The increase in R&D expenditures is expected to have a positive impact on 51ยายื's share of Research Incentive appropriations, which the Ohio Board of Regents awards to universities based on their levels of external research support.
