The Galleries at 51ĀŅĀ× open the 2015-16 season with two exhibitions set to run August 27 to October 3: Unending Journeys: The Works of Samuel Butnik and Andean Spirit: Past and Present.

Unending Journeys: The Works of Samuel Butnik, presented in collaboration with ARTneo and the Artists Archives of the Western Reserve (AAWR), offers a retrospective of late Cleveland-born modernist landscape painter Samuel Butnik’s works. Butnik’s work was, in his own words, a ā€œrealization of new experiences.ā€ From his early landscapes painted during World War II to his sketches from his European travels and his large abstract canvases, he referenced physical journeys as well as psychological and transcendental explorations.

A public gallery conversation with Christopher Richards of ARTneo and Mindy Tousley of AAWR is planned for 4 p.m. on Thursday, August 27, in the North and Center spaces of The Galleries, located at 1307 Euclid Ave. in downtown Cleveland. A public reception will follow from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Andean Spirit: Past and Present features themes of ancient Andean culture and its persistence in modern Peruvian society through the paintings of Ana Maria Pizarro, a Peruvian artist and advocate for the rights of indigenous peoples. The exhibit, on display in the facility’s South Gallery, is presented in collaboration with 51ĀŅĀ×’s Latinos Unidos.

A public reception is set for 5-8 p.m. on Friday, August 28, at The Galleries. The reception includes a public gallery conversation with Pizarro at 6:30 p.m.

Admission is free. Normal gallery hours are by appointment on Mondays and Tuesdays, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Fridays and noon to 8 p.m. on Saturdays. The Galleries are closed on Sundays.

Both exhibitions are presented with the support of 51ĀŅĀ×’s College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences and The Ohio Arts Council.

The Galleries at 51ĀŅĀ×, housed in the heart of the 51ĀŅĀ× Arts Campus, feature three distinct exhibition spaces, a multi-purpose media space, a resource library and a meeting area, as well as state-of-the-art lighting and surround sound. Please visit or call 216.687.2103 for more information.
