Advising Students Through the Transition
Fast-Track Petitions
The Fast-Track Petition decision matrix is currently being updated to align with the new Core Curriculum. More updates to come.
Catalog Rights
Current Students may switch from GenEd08 catalog rights to Inquiry Core Curriculum catalog rights without changing their college or major catalog rights. You are encouraged to examine whether a student would benefit from such a switch, but more often students will be better off or at least no worse off changing on GenEd08 catalog rights.
- The students most likely to benefit from the switch will be those who have completed 24 or fewer credit hours
- To change a student's catalog rights, submit an AdCom request. Be sure to specify whether the student is updating all their catalog rights (including college/major) or only their university catalog rights
Incoming Transfer Students are placed on Inquiry Core catalog rights by default. But they may switch to GenEd08 catalog rights, as they may have been completed requirements at another institution under those guidelines.
- This change can only apply to university requirement catalog rights. College/Major catalog rights must stay aligned with their admit term
- This permission will remain into effect through Summer 2027
- To complete, submit an AdCom request
Returning Students are already generally allowed to "reclaim" old catalog rights via fast-track petitions. That procedure remains the same for a student returning Fall '25 and beyond who previously attended under GenEd08.
Non-Degree Seeking Students, such as transient/guest students or College Credit Plus students, do not have catalog rights. Their catalog rights are assigned when they are admitted to a degree seeking program.
Transfer Credits
Transfer Credit Codes will remain the same but the titles will be updated to reflect the core curriculum requirements. For instance, "Arts & Humanities" transfer credit will still show up as "AH 100" but will now read as "Human Culture & Creativity", beginning Fall 2025.
- Consult the Crosswalk to determine how the codes will apply under the new Core
Petitions for "Global Human Perspectives" transfer credit. Students who transfer in two approved OT-36 "Arts & Humanities" courses may petition for waiver of the "Global Human Perspectives" requirement.
- This requires completion of a University Petition
- Approval is based on confirmation that the incoming courses are/were OT-36 approved. This evidence should be provided by the student.
- This is being done to ensure proper alignment with the ODHE's OT-36 general education requirements
Degree Audit
Students switching to Core with previous GenEd08 AdComs. A previously granted AdCom will still apply if the requirement did not substantially change. The AdCom will not apply if the requirement has substantially changed.
- Reevaluation by an Academic Coach is needed once catalog rights are updated to determine if a new AdCom is required
- This will mostly occur in situations where the credit hour number changed in the requirement, such as moving from the 1-credit hour "Introduction to University Life" to the 3-credit hour "Inquiry Launch" requirement
Accomodations and Waivers for Spring 25 and Summer 26 graduates. The retroactive changes to GenEd08 going into effect, and will be properly programmed, for Fall 2025.
- Degree Audit should reflect these changes later in the Summer
- You may currently see the effect of the changes by running a "What-If" report in Degree Audit and selecting "Summer 2025 catalog rights"
- If a Spring 2025 or Summer 2025 graduate would benefit from one of these changes, you must submit an AdCom on their behalf.
Old Courses & Old General Education Systems
A student who is on, or wants to return to, a general education system prior to GenEd08 (such as GenEd98) will need to be evaluated individually.
- Academic Coaches should conduct the initial review of the student record and an assessment of how current courses should apply to old general education requirements
- The Registrar's Office is available to support review and determine applicability. You may also need to consult academic departments and faculty advisors, particularly for degree requirements.
- There are 3 potentially relevant prior general education systems
- GenEd98: Fall 1998 to Summer 2008 (semesters)
- University Curricular Requirements: Fall 1995 to Summer 1998 (quarters)
- University Group Requirements: Pre-Fall 1995 (quarters)
A similar approach should be taken when a student has old courses that need to be applied to newer degree requirements.
